Here’s a video I shot/edited at a session for jazz legend, Jimmy Cobb. Jimmy is a legendary jazz drummer and elder statesman who played with Miles Davis (among countless others) in the first Miles quintet and on Kind Of Blue, the best-selling jazz recording of all time. Among all his accolades and his many years (79!) he has always been the portrait of a gentlemen and a friend of the family since before my addition to it.
Playing with a quartet on a new release under his name, this track is entitled I’ll Still Be In Love With You and is written and conducted by my father, Steve Satten. I love how the tune/arrangement came out and am just happy to have been present for the session, recorded in an immense, beautiful church on the West Side.
Covering jazz performance is always difficult because of the improvisational nature and no takes every being the same. For this song there were two takes, both of which drastically different. Regardless, I’m glad I could capture the moment and am able to share with all fans of jazz, a purely American art-form in decline.
